Trench Feet

As mentioned above, in the war diary of the attack mounted on 1st July 1916, frontline soldiers were expected to stand in trenches for hours, and on occasions for days on end, in water up to their knees. This prolonged exposure to damp conditions resulted in a condition known as “trench feet or foot”. Detailed descriptions of Trench Foot are often disturbing.
